Could it be the kids naturally choose chores based on gender?

My son would rather mow the grass, clean the trashcan, wash the car or clean the garage. My daughter doesn't want to do any if that. I just have task around the house that need to be done I don't care who does them as long as they are done.

It’s true where I grew up but I don’t let it happen in my own family. I have both daughter and son.

I don't know of any family who does this, OP.

However, I do know of clueless grandmothers who want their granddaughters to look pretty and know domestic arts, and want their grandsons to prioritize their professional futures. My MIL, and others. They're thinking: great-grandchildren!

I only have sons. They had cleaning chores. I also taught them how to iron and sew on a button.

I grew up with a sister. I got stuck as the younger one doing everything. She never lifted a finger.

I didn't because it was fine in our home. Boys learned to cook and daughter lmowed lawn.

Happened with me in the 80s. My brother mowed the grass and I had to clean most of the house and do most of the laundry.

Hopefully people are more enlightened now.

I'm the oldest and only daughter in my family. The brunt of household chores and taking care of the baby were dumped on me. My brothers ran free and played outside while I stayed inside and scrubbed floors, washed dishes, changed diapers, etc. Around 40 some years later, when our mother became unable to take care of herself, I'll let you guess who had to quit her job and take on the chore by herself.

I haven’t seen that at all. My stepson has as many chores as my daughters and stepdaughter.

I see this. I think it's not as blatant as when we were kids.

What I see: parents of boys are more lax with how messy they let their rooms get. They get assigned seasonal chores like mowing the lawn (2 hours once a week) while girls get assigned doing dishes every single night (30 min a day). I think a lot of parents don't even realize it's happening. Some of it is that girls might do chores more willingly or maybe are more interested in keeping their rooms cleaner. Parents just expect more home and family participation from their daughters versus their sons.

I should add that we modeled balanced roles - DH does all the cooking and definitely took on 50% of child care. I have the higher pressure, higher income job. That makes a difference.

Okay. A study of Irish kids.

My 13 year old boy waters the plants, takes out the trash, empties the dishwasher, feeds the pets, walks the dog. This is all daily.

His 9 year old sister doesn't do nearly as much. She will when she's older. She has her own chores.
