It's something that needs to exist at schools that draw from neighborhoods that aren't wealthy. It's unbelievable how screwed up MCPS is that they don't even look at what kids are signing up for to see if it puts them on a track to graduate.

Its something that should exist for all students regardless. Not just to put them on track to graduate, but to ensure they are taking a well rounded curriculum for THEM, and not just dong whatever seems most advance or keeping up with others. But because counselors have 100’s of kids and are also responsible for behavior and mental health it doesn’t get done or not done well.

Maybe Elrich's 10% property tax hike will address this, but will likely go to creating more central office positions and RJ initiatives.

I don't think B-CC gets more "hatred" than many other schools discussed on DCUM; you just happen to notice it because it's the school for your neighborhood.

Although I would say that schools like WJ and QO tend to get a pass because they aren't as wealthy as Whitman or as diverse as Einstein. B-CC doesn't get that treatment because the core area is pretty darn expensive and any public school that serves an wealthy area like CC gets more heavily scrutinized.

We are happy so far with BCC, although I do wish the academic counseling was there, as a PP pointed out, but I agree it's just too big. I grew up lower class in a fairly urban suburban area (not in the DMV) and I'm glad that my DC is getting to experience the diversity that let's face it, is missing in a lot of their day to day (outside of school) living in Bethesda/CC. DH grew up opposite of me and agrees. This is not the real world and I'm glad that DC can see that there's so many different cultures and ethnicities and learns to appreciate that now instead of living in a bubble all the time.

I personally felt suffocated in the affluent homogenous bubble and prefer the creativity and international feel when there is economic and cultural diversity. To each their own though.

I think it comes from several places:

1) As noted above, there are people who think it's a gang-infested, low scoring hell-hole because there are, gasp! a fair number of lower income POC kids. They use the excuse of overall lower scores to justify that BCC is not the place for their snowflakes when, in fact, their over-protected, over-prepared white kids will do just as well at BCC as at a W school.

2) The parents who live in CCMD who piss on BCC to justify sending their kids to private

3) The parents in NW DC who send their kids to private or J-R and always have a little feeling in the back of their heads of "I wonder if we just moved across Western Ave. and sent our kids to BCC?" then feel the need justify their decision by pointing out BCC's flaws.

You are exaggerating and being dramatic, OP.

I am one of those who explained on other threads that I prefer WJ to BCC. I stated all my reasons.

I also note that BCC is a FINE school. My last child will go there.

If you insist on skipping the nuances of each post, you'll be constantly mired in conflict.

But perhaps that's what you're looking for?
