YES, my kid did this field trip this year and YES it was terrible. I thought she was exaggerating then her teacher confirmed they only had time to look at two paintings, then back in the bus. I was honestly just perplexed by the whole thing. Why even bother.

Is there some reason that they can't use parent drivers? I went to a private school and we always had parent drivers. 5 kids to a van. Parents signed liability waivers.

Well, right now its 35 minutes in a car from Lorton to DC. Add in a bus is slower than a car, morning rush traffic, and navigating DC traffic to get to a museum once you cross into the city, I could see it taking an hour.

We just went on a field trip last week to the Natural History. We couldn't leave until 9:30 and the bus had to leave DC by 12:45 to be back for the middle school run, but we had over 2.5 hours there. Under an hour makes no sense unless they got stuck in horrible traffic.

Unfortunately, in FCPS, if you live farther away from DC, you get really screwed for field trips. Especially if your school is a late arrival school. You can't leave until all the buses are in, which puts you at a 10 am or later departure. Then your buses have to be back by 1:30 to get to the middle schools on time for their dismissal. So leaving at 1015---arrive in DC an hour later at 11:15 and then you need to leave DC by 12:30....it just doesn't allow for any decent field trip experiences. They should make an exception, I am sure they have some "reserve" buses they could use.

We were told they could only spend less than an hour at a DC museum because of the timing for using the buses, therefore, the school didn't bother going to museums at all. I guess except for this field trip, my kid isn't in 6th yet.


The schools that care and have well off PTAs charter buses for every field trip
