Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Bath, suggested postponing consideration of the bill for a year and having the Virginia State Crime Commission study its definitions of what qualifies as an assault weapon. Deeds was joined by three other Democrats — Sens. Chap Petersen, D-Fairfax, Scott Surovell, D-Fairfax, and John Edwards, D-Roanoke — in voting for the motion to continue the bill to 2021.

“We passed a lot of gun bills this year,” Deeds said. “There are obviously a lot of questions about definitions in this bill. And definitions do matter.”

The bill would have defined assault weapons as any semi-automatic rifle or pistol with a fixed magazine capacity of more than 12 rounds or a semi-automatic weapon capable of accepting a detachable magazine that has one or more additional military-style characteristics, such as a folding or telescoping stock, a second grip, a grenade or flare launcher or a silencer. The bill would have applied to shotguns with revolving cylinders or a fixed magazine capacity of more than seven rounds.

Gun proponents had called the definitions overbroad, saying they would affect popular firearms owned by countless Virginians.

Yes. He was on Fox News talking about it.

I'm rooting for Yalowitz!

He sponsored a 2023 session bill that would have exempted certain natural gas pipelines from local zoning regulation. Thank God it didn't pass.

Chap is an old-style, retail politician, good with people. No one who has spent any appreciable amount of time with Erika Yalowitz can stand her. She's insufferable and every other word out of her mouth is "progressive."

If you want Karl Frisch with a ponytail, she's a good choice. Otherwise NFW.

Fairfax Dems aren't interested representing their prospective constituents, just the litmus tests (to stick it to Youngkin and his acolytes).

Chap, on the other hand, stepped up by listening to the people in his district.

I know most people are not on Twitter, but should he be worried? I support him, but I wasn't happy with a few of his votes Like opposition to legislation legalizing marijuana and the mask rule, other than that I support him.

A lot of people would vote for him because of the mask rule. Fairfax would still be wearing masks if it wasn't for him. The school boards wanted to stick it to Youngkin, and didn't expect him to abandon them in the name of common sense.

Now there is circulating amongst some in Vienna that there will be a likely endorsement by Holly Siebold (the new state delegate) for Erika Yalowitz in the Democratic primary...

Given all the support Chap Peterson gave to her to win over Karl Frisch... well, I guess that's "just politics."

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Twitter thread OP posted. "More Cowbells" absolutely demolishes the "Chap Peterson is the only Dem who votes against the Caucus" fallacy. Once again, it seems Blue Virginia and those on the far left of the horseshoe continue to misrepresent facts and abuse math and are rightfully called out for it. Not that anybody notices...

That's the way to beat him. If I was running against him, everything would center around Advanced Towing

And, while what has been said upthread is v true re: Chap being conservative compared to his district/the average primary voter, he also seems to be light years past his opponents as far as getting out and talking to voters is concerned. I assume this is a function of his being a very experienced politician with $$ in the bank.

One example: his opponents both held their campaign kickoff parties on the same weekend. Meaning, they were jut getting started raising $, getting volunteers, etc. But Chap already had literature and yard signs printed and was out distributing them and knocking on doors. He also has enough $$ that he can afford to pay people to knock on doors for him, while his opponents are relying on volunteers to help them. And I imagine that he will be able to afford LOTS of mailers, social ads, etc.

He definitely has money and a machine but that doesn’t make him the best candidate.

Well, it shows people are willing to give him money and volunteer their time for him.

Thr new district is very similar to his old district. Its a waste of progressive dollars to try and challenge him. I dont agree with all his positions but I do strongly appreciate a politician who currently has kids in public schools.

I met Erika Yalowitz a few weeks ago and she is VERY impressive. I hope Saddam drops out and gets behind her.

No, she’s kind of a caricature of a progressive candidate. Vienna isn’t Takoma Park so Chap should have no problem.
