LIM is an absolute joke and waste of taxpayer dollars. If MCPS actually gave a f, they would spend the money on hiring more guidance counselors and school psychologist. But it’s so corrupt and someone in central probably benefited from outsourcing a curriculum that is based on religious principals.

We rolled out Leader in Me at my elementary school the first year MCPS implemented the program. It's not at all helpful. It is not a SEL curriculum - it was meant to be a school improvement program. Our kids need an actual SEL curriculum. LIM and RJ are NOT helping us at this point.

Well, I felt it was a transformative experience for the students who went into it with an open mind and me. Unfortunately, many feel changes to their daily routine (training) are an imposition and are resentful.


It's a wonderful program. A lot of the RWNJ who turf these boards oppose the use of school funds for anything other than SROs and are especially against any SEL programming.

Teachers are not counselors. They are teachers in their subject matter. The SEL training that was done in my kids' high school was a flop and a joke for exactly the reasons you said. It was done in homeroom, by teachers they have no connection to and the content was so canned and stiff that the kids didn't see the value in it. But MCPS continues to go after this model time and time again. Why?


Because someone made some good money on it! MCPS had money to spend and this is the type of thing that MCPS loves to spend money on. To the tune of over a million dollars.

My kid did this with her Math teacher in MS. What a joke. It would have been better to just let students go get extra help in Math (or whatever subject matter) versus wasting this time on SEL. Math teachers are not counselors and likely, most of them do not want to be.

Perhaps, it would be better integrated if teachers made an effort to take these training opportunities seriously instead of feeling imposed on by these enrichment opportunities.

Transformative? Leader in Me?! lol you really drank the kool-aid or you’re a covey shill, stalking these boards. You don’t have to have an open mind to know this program isn’t going to be a transformative experience for anyone who possesses critical thinking skills. It’s not terrible, but it’s definitely nothing special. The kids hate it and it has nothing to do with the teachers teaching it and everything to do with the content.

I refuse to watch the cringy videos in the slides. It doesn't really meet the personal or emotional needs of the students right now. Some of the info seems like it talks down to the kids or has tones from the Mormon church. A whole slide on why caffeine is bad for you? Meanwhile my high schoolers and I are drinking out coffees...

It can work at the elementary level. But once the kids hit grade 5 and up LiM starts to fall apart and gets nothing but apathy from students and staff. To the poster above, Leader in Me was a $1.8 million $ budget item passed by the BoE. My strong impression is that it is from care act funding not local taxes. I too dread the training. The thought of teaching LiM gave me anxiety all year since they just through it into my homeroom where all these initiatives go to die.[/quote
