It's not my concern if my 9th grader ends up hospitalized?

OP it sounds like you need to book an appointment with your son's allergist to discuss this.

I did. My son's allergist says that it's too soon for the allergy shots to be effective and he should wear a mask. My son's allergist has not vacationed in the South since the pandemic so he can't answer the question in the OP, which is the only question I'm asking DCUM to answer.

Yes, your son will get flak wearing a mask outdoors in the South.

Probably.

No one can really answer this for you because no one wears them outside so no experience with it.

My kids have terrible allergies, as well, and I wouldn't mask them outdoors. Pollen affects their eyes anyway.

You should work with your allergist to get weekly shots or sublingual drops. We're on our first season of the drops and they have been working quite well.

I have a kid who had terrible allergies for a while. For a few days, they would wear a cap with a brim, sunglasses, and a painter's mask. They still felt it but it was less than going without.

Got it. From everything I know about the South, I would go in assuming he will get flak. Only you know how much your teen could shrug it off.

PP again. Or, your son's pulmonologist. Whoever follows him more closely.

Unless you are confident that a mask will be effective or that they will wear it the whole time, I would probably just pass altogether.

Why are you taking a kid to Florida right now if you are worried about this?

Florida is not a place to go right now.

Please explain why Florida is not a place to go right now. I'm a bit concerned that I've missed something and I live in Florida. Are you referring to seasonal allergens?

Really, he just shouldn't go on the trip. My brother has terrible asthma and we took a trip to Florida during orange blossom season. He made it one night and we spent the rest of the trip at the hospital. It was a huge mess. They finally released him with instructions to go straight to the airport and fly home.

Wearing a mask the whole trip isn't a solution--and there's no guarantee it was just golfing that was the problem last year. He was exposed to the local allergens the whole trip. Golfing may have just been the straw that broke the camel's back. It's all cumulative and takes a while for symptoms to emerge so you never really know.

OMG Nitwit, if he’s going to end up hospitalized, CLEARLY he shouldn’t go on the trip.

Not a fan of PP's expression, but I agree with the sentiment. If the consequence of him not wearing a mask (or improperly wearing one) is that dire, then this trip is a no go.

I think it'll be funny that he wears his mask outside and take it off inside

Ignore the echo chamber it's fine OP. No one cares what anyone is doing now masked or not. The "shock" of the mask is gone. Live freely.
