I added BCC to this list. And Special Ed and FARMs rates.

1. Walt Whitman High School (83.5%) SpecEd 9.5% FARMs under 5%: https://reportcard.msde.maryland.gov/Graphs/#/ReportCards/ReportCardSchool/1/H/1/15/0427/0
2. Winston Churchill High School (82.8%) SpecEd 13.1% FARMs 6.5%: https://reportcard.msde.maryland.gov/Graphs/#/ReportCards/ReportCardSchool/1/H/1/15/0602/0
3. Thomas Wooton High School (80.3%) SpecEd 8.0% FARMs 8.2%: https://reportcard.msde.maryland.gov/Graphs/#/ReportCards/ReportCardSchool/1/H/1/15/0234/0
4. Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School (76.1%) SpecEd 8.4% FARMS 17.3%: https://reportcard.msde.maryland.gov/Graphs/#/ReportCards/ReportCardSchool/1/H/1/15/0406/0
5. Walter Johnson High School (75.9%) SpecEd 10.5% FARMs 13.1%: https://reportcard.msde.maryland.gov/Graphs/#/ReportCards/ReportCardSchool/1/H/1/15/0424/0

I noticed Poolesville comes in above all the Ws at 84.4%. SpecEd 6.2 FARMs 8.7% https://reportcard.msde.maryland.gov/Graphs/#/ReportCards/ReportCardSchool/1/H/1/15/0152/0

Yes, the least diverse lowest FARMS schools are always at the top of these lists.

Shocking!

Ugh. Our middle school for next year (Silver Creek) has only three stars, and it seems like the percentages needed to get 4 and 5 starts aren't really that hard. Not a good sign.

I look at the student and teacher survey results mostly. Unfortunately they also seem affected by SES.

Is anyone else surprised by the poor performance of the “good” schools? That star system is the equivalent of a heavily scaled test.

OK, fine. Here they are

School Total Earned Points
Whitman 83.6
Churchill 82.8
Wootton 80.4
BCC 76.2
Walter Johnson 76
Richard Montgomery 70.4
Poolesville 69.7
Sherwood 68.8
Northwest 68
Clarksburg 66.9
Damascus 66.3
Quince Orchard 65.7
Rockville 65.3
Einstein 63.9
Blair 63.2
Magruder 62.1
Wheaton 61.6
Springbrook 61.6
Blake 61.1
Paint Branch 59.2
Seneca Valley 58.3
Northwood 55.8
Gaithersburg 53
Watkins Mill 52.2
Kennedy 49.2

Pretty close to the reverse of a FARMS rate-sorted list. So neither surprising nor meaningful.

+1 Almost to the exact order of lowest to highest FARMS. I mean, you could've just listed the FARMs rate and not bother looking at MSDE.

This is largely useful but you have to look at the percentages because the denominators aren’t all the same, For example, some schools have such low percentages of English language learners that they don’t get points in the totals above for their success but those totals are also divided into lower denominators.

This might not make sense in the abstract but it will if you look at the full report for a school from a wealthy western part of the county and then one from an eastern part of the county with a high immigrant population.

Agree with the PP, they should just create a heat map of school boundaries showing HHI and it would yield the same results.

The boundary analysis did a map based on Ever-FARMS rates

I was shocked how low the scores are at some of these 5 star rated schools. Low, low bar. And these represent the best of the bunch?

I think the FARMS rate is highly correlated with English Language Learners. There are several different metrics that take a hit because of ELLs. When this new rating system came out I was pretty disgusted, because it’s effectively useless the way it is set-up. Pull all data for ELLs into their own category for 4 years after arriving in US. Leave the main categories with only data from kids who speak English, so those comparisons are more meaningful.

Reminder that this is data from the 2021-2022 school year. I'll be interested to show how things compare when the 2022-2023 school year is released. MCPS's data has shown improvements YoY so hopefully that'll align at the state level as well.

Our middle school (Rosa Parks) got 3 stars // 57.3.

Yikes!

This is in the Sherwood pyramid.

2 of the local elementary schools earned 5 stars while the other 2 earned 4 stars.

In our cluster, the Middle Schools are the weak link - no surprise there, I suppose.
