Amazing movie. This is your answer OP.

Came here to post this. LOVED this movie as a tween (also loved Stand By Me, fwiw).

Little Women (1994 and 2019)
The Man in the Moon
Dirty Dancing
Edge of Seventeen
Fly Away Home
Mermaids
Harriet the Spy (DS loves this too)
Thirteen
Lucas
Tall Girl and Tall Girl 2
Juno
13 going on 30
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

I also thought they would love the John Hughes movies, which are pretty tame in retrospect, but they didn't really "get" them. Sentimental for me though.

Loved Lucas!!

8th grade is my favorite, but it might be a little heavy for a 12 year old

They absolutely do “have a gender.” If you don’t think boys are more into stereotypically boy movies and girls into girl movies (because they can relate to the characters of their own gender more intimately), you’re just being deliberately obtuse. And please don’t anyone parachute in with the “but I’m a girl and loved Stand by Me!”

I get it, PP, but I also understand why a girl might want to watch movies made mostly for girls. Why aren’t you mad that Now and Then and Lady Bird are movies mostly made to relate to women/young women? It’s ok for a movie to be that sometimes.

"other than Stand By Me"

Stand by Me is great for any gender, but I do think it was better for a kid slightly older than 12.

+1 to the bolded. A few of the listed movies are more sexual than I’m comfortable showing an 11-year-old. Sisterhood is a great movie (and book), but Blake Lively’s character sleeps with her soccer coach at summer camp. The emotional aftermath is portrayed well and you may find it beneficial for your child to see that.
