I am turning 40 this year and have only been in Talbots and Chicos with my mom who is 67. I would never ever in a million years think about shopping there. I always thought it was for older ladies.

Anyway I get stitch fix every 3 months. Helps spruce up my closet with newer fashions and then I supplement for things like jeans and formal wear.

H&M sweaters this year were incredible. Why do people like you get on here and talk about stuff you have no clue about. If you haven’t shopped at H&M in forever you may not realize it isn’t all $5 flimsy tees anymore - there are some very solid basics to be had there like blazers, sweaters, etc

It’s not that much about age. There’s a point past 30 when you have to turn to better materials and cut if you want to look good. H&M doesn’t cut it anymore. But no one needs to wear Talbots and « old ladies » brands. It doesn’t flatter anyone regardless of age. Women past 50 or 60 don’t look good in those dated styles either. They need modern cuts or timeless pieces.

But she’s 37, how does knowing where a 55 year old shops help her? She wants to dress more her age, not older


I’ve never shopped at Chicos, Talbots or any place similar so I think I can advise. Every place I’ve mentioned can fit a wide age range and PPs have mentioned the same places so why are you calling out the 55 year old?

I’m a few years older and I tend to buy from J Crew, J Crew Factory, and Loft for casual clothes. I sheepishly will admit I started buying some basics (thick, not see through or cropped) tees at J Jill last summer. They have some good basics that are not matronly though the clientele are definitely older in my area.

Also 37: I mostly shop at J Crew, Madewell, LL Bean, and Loft. Last year, I ordered a couple of boxes from Stitch Fix, which was fun but too much polyester for the price.

I’m 37. I like Zara, H&M, Abercrombie, Mango, Aritzia, &otherstories, Stradivarius for basics. Zara jeans are some of the only jeans I can find that fit me well - I’m very petite and their waist is actually small enough. My biggest suggestion for style is to get on Tiktok and follow a few people your age for inspiration . Also try CharlyGoss on IG, she’s great for helping people switch up a dated look for something more current.

I vote for Anthropologie because you can go in and try on and get a feel for how their different lines fit. Their website offers pretty candid, detailed reviews that are very helpful.

I have a super bodacious type body (hourglass with 34 DDD breasts) and the stuff from Chico's and Talbots helps me look work appropriate. Their clothes don't accentuate the boobs and butt. YMMV.
