When I was looking, back in 2019, for any place walking distance to downtown, the absolute dirt cheapest place was $2100 for an infant. Most were around $2400, I remember the most expensive was $2800. And there's been a LOT of inflation since then. These numbers do go down as the kids get older, but while some went down after 12 months, several didn't go down in price until they were two!
I can't imagine that there's THAT much of a price difference between downtown and farther out in DC/close in suburbs. Is it just because downtown there are no in-homes to drive prices down?
I wasn't shocked by the average - I was shocked by the floor. This was not "cheapest I was willing to go with." $2100 was literally the cheapest that existed. There were zero options cheaper than that.
We live in downtown Silver Spring and commute to Rockville. I noticed a big difference between what was available in Silver Spring versus Rockville. In Silver Spring the center-based options are pretty limited, especially for infants. You really needed to get on waitlists for centers very early and many places wouldn't even call you back. In Rockville, at least in 2019, we were offered spots at most centers we got on the (free) waitlists for and I was well into my second trimester when I signed up.
