It’s kind of sad that there’s an expectation for a high schooler to get paid $20/hr tax free to eat pizza, play with kids for a couple of hours and then scroll on their phone for a couple hours once the kids are in bed whereas minimum wage adult factory workers are lucky to make 15/hr pre tax….and yes that’s the typical rate I pay to our high school sitters (who typically can’t even be bothered to load their dirty dishes in the dishwasher) for my two early elementary kids because it’s standard for our area but objectively it’s ridiculous.

I am a teacher (I'm 24) and I babysit weekends. Once I got my degree I started charging 22$ up from 20$, with a 4-hour minimum. I told all my families in advance and it made no difference to them; I still have all the same clients. This is for 2 kids. For 3 kids I charge $25. Cash only, of course. I am fully booked every weekend. 6-hour cancellation policy.

I pay a high schooler 15/hr for 1 kid, and a college student $17/hr (a recent raise from 15/hr).

I’m a substitute teacher and I just got a raise to $15/hr.

I have always had great babysitters who charge less. We pay $15 per hour. As others mentioned it’s tax free money. If you can afford more by all means do but you don’t have to pay that much for a good babysitter.

That seems ridiculous to me. She isn’t some professional babysitter with a ton of experience. I don’t think any teenager should be getting more than $15/hr. The money is tax free and in cash.


She's willing to give up her Friday or Saturday night to make sure the children in her charge are safe.


Not to forget that you don't get to go out if you have no sitter. What is a "professional babysitter"?

I pay $20 in Arlington. When I have the high schoolers, they usually say $18.
