We use a small metal trash can with a lid that sits next to our regular trash can. It's designed for compost and has a carbon filter in the lid. I would say we empty it about every other day but sometimes it's more often. I like that it's metal because it's easy to hose out if it gets gross and nothing really sticks to it, so I don't need to scrub it very often.
