Many choose Whitman because of the location. It's perfect for outdoorsy students, with beautiful country to explore and a very cute town right off of the campus. The weather is sunnier and milder than the Northeastern LAC's. PASCO Airport is a short hop from Seattle.

New London is the home of Connecticut College (as well as the Coast Guard Academy)

It is close to Mystic though, which is much nicer

Colby, Colgate and Bucknell were all lovely campuses but DC hated the locations (I agreed).

Of the ones we know:
Trinity
Bard (decrepit campus)
Johns Hopkins (safety issues)

Albright College In Reading, PA. The surroundings were very unappealing.

I have a kid at one of the schools mentioned here. He loves the cold weather and he's not a city kid. His school is known for good food at the cafeteria but there's plenty of takeout options too. There's a shuttle o several small towns nearby for movies or shopping or to a larger city with an airport and lots of other stuff to do that's 40 minutes away. Tbh he mainly hangs out on campus and that would be the case even if he were in a big city. I wouldn't want to live in the town where his school is located but I kind of think the question of location is a bit overstated for many (but not all) kids.

It does have an Amtrak stop.

Most LAC were purposefully built in remote areas. The plus side is that the community’s lives revolve around campus (opposite of attending NYU). The negative side is boredom and difficulty finding community if the school is not a good fit. I would say a bad location is anywhere more than an hour from a good-sized city.

Bates/Bowdoin are only about 45 min from Portland and even closer to the ocean. Colby is much more isolated.

Williams, being in the Berkshires, has more options to go to places with restaurants and shops nearby, not to mention the beautiful nearby outdoor spaces. My DC is there with a car, which makes a big difference.

When we toured LACs, I thought Kenyon was in the worst location. That part of Ohio is very sad.

There is something to be said for attending a SAC in a "bad" or more accurately "remote" location. Its different. I went to St. Lawrence and absolutely loved the location. yes Canton is quite depressed, all of update NY is depressed, but driving through the Adirondacks to get there? Loved it. I came from the suburbs outside NYC and this was so different than what I was used to, that it was a very impactful experience. Eye opening actually. Its also so insular that the kids really stick together and create more of a community than you might see in a location that has more "non-college" things to do.

Grinnell has become super selective despite what many consider to be a highly undesirable location. Just imagine if it were somewhere else?
