6) we discover dad stole millions from not just his clients but several injured/disabled clients
All this leads to review is the fact that:
7) housekeeper who was “like family” died under mysterious circumstances
8) dad stole millions from housekeepers kids who lived in a trailer and were evicted after her death.
9) you gay man was murdered on the road, again mysterious circumstances possible link to one living brother.
10) cops “overlook/bungle” all of the above because the family is so powerful.
Add in
11) a dog named Bubba and a nameless but heroic chicken.
12) People named Buster, Handsome (not handsome), Paw Paw, Mags, Poppa T, Ro Ro etc….
13) finally, dad (who is a lawyer) decides to take the stand in his trial and it is televised.

The fact that I’m not sure if I left anything out should give you an indication of why this is garnering so much attention. You might not want to see a guy set himself on fire accidentally on purpose but if he does, you’re gonna slow down and take a look. It’s rare for one person at this level to make such a complete mess of their pretty darn good life. The disappointment is that we have yet to see a mistress or moonshine. It also kind of validates everything that northerners secretly think these small, Southern towns are like.

Really, really engrossing, and a sad look at how pervasive corruption is - specifically in that community, but one can presume similar injustices occurring all over the country.

If you put all of this in a book or movie people would claim it was far fetched and stereotypical.

So why are you assuming he did it? The prosecution has no direct evidence.

The fact that you are willing to condemn an entire family you never met based on a Netflix documentary and Mandy matney’s biased “reporting” doesn’t show very good critical thinking skills.

Alex is clearly a bad apple. But that doesn’t mean the whole family is awful. A lot of people in Hampton county, black and white, poor and rich, will tell you many other people in the family did a lot of good for the county and were good people.

Stop making assumptions based on a sensationalist documentary. And the people extrapolating this to the entire south are being ridiculous. Is everyone in Italy a horrible person because some people are in the mafia?


People are convicted of murder on circumstantial evidence every day and it holds the same weight under the law. They may not have the actual gun but it was proven it was the families gun that was used. That is the point.

That said, I agree with extrapolating this. Many places have their small town corruption but this one is OTT.

It is so, so much bigger than just a domestic murder. This is just the most sensational part of the entire complicated ordeal. That said, I totally understand why it is weird to many people that it is getting so much attention nationally - the context is impossible to describe in a 2 minute discussion.

Honestly the Murdaugh Murder podcast provides the best context but it is a huge investment of time to start from the beginning.

It’s a big deal because of the other past deaths relating to the family, Buster’s alleged lover, the maid and the boating accident. It’s also compelling because how backwards the county is/was. Because this was a prominent family, local law enforcement didn’t do its job.

The documentary said the wife had recently hired a forensic accountant and was talking to divorced lawyers. She either knew or was close to knowing that he had bilked his clients and law firm out of millions. I think it’s possible that he didn’t expect Paul to be there and wasn’t planning on killing him. He was a drug addict, financially ruined and about to be socially ruined when everyone found out about his embezzlement. He was desperate and desperate people do crazy things.

I’m not convinced the family had anything to do with Gloria, the housekeeper’s death.

Morgan’s family seemed honestly pretty clueless about the level of drinking (and what Paul was like— he obviously could put on a good show). I think the Cook family is a different story, since they were tight socially with the Murdaughs. In the HBO doc either Anthony’s or Connor’s parents commented about how they had warned their kid that if there was trouble the Murdaughs would be out for themselves. And yet they were close friends? It sounded like they saw the family for what it was but were happy to enjoy the benefits of being close to them and allow their children to be in their orbit as well. At great price.


The stunning thing for me was that no one called the Beach family when this happened. They were clearly the outliers. The boyfriend’s mother in the doc was like “I don’t want to call them.” Duh - no one WANTS to call them, but you do. Such small, selfish people all.
