Real dancers do real barre. They look a bit different than the women in Purebarre classes

The reason "real dancers" look the way they do is because the ones who don't look like that don't rise to elite levels. Not because "real barre" itself makes them look like that. The build comes first. Did Peter Gallagher in Center Stage teach you nothing?

You are absolutely incorrect. You don't understand the movie.

A real ballet barre portion of class will improve anyone. Not Pure Barre crap.

This. Former dancer here. The Pure Barre class is a joke. Absolute waste. It is hardly a work out at all.

I agree. I gained 60 pounds with my second pregnancy and got into the best shape of my life afterward with Bar Method DVDs

I run as my main workout. Then I sometimes do barre to work on core stuff. But it's running that keeps off the weight.

I'm an experienced exerciser and very fit in my 40s. I have tried Barre and even took a course to teach it. If one can do it properly and consistently, I think it can be a challenging workout.

With a full-time job and a few kids, I don't do it because it's not the most efficient workout for what I need. For cardio, I prefer to run outside. For strength training, I can get the same results lifting heavy, which I enjoy more and which takes less time. I find Barre frankly boring and monotonous no matter how hard I'm working.

But, when I have an empty nest and more time on my hands, I can totally see myself adding at least a Barre class to my routine and I imagine I will also be the older lady, super fit lady and ppl will think I got that way through Barre.

+1. I’m an experienced athlete and I think barre is harder than running.

Make here.
I eat lunch regularly after my gym workout at a restaurant next to a Pure Barre and the woman going in there are not old they are all mid 20s to early 40s. It runs a close third to Target and Whole Foods for number of attractive woman in one place between 9am and 2pm.

Agreed. It’s definitely easier than many other forms of exercise. I also dislike it because the instructors are always prattling on about how it will create “long, lean muscles.” Sorry, if you’re not built long and lean, barre will not make you so.

True. You cannot lengthen your muscles.

Yes you can. If your muscles are extremely tight you can certainly lengthen them/stretch them out.

Purebarre is bull and boring as hell too. I tried it for a few months and that is quite enough of that for the rest of my life.

I love barre! I don’t do it often, I prefer weights to build muscle BUT i think it’s a great work out, especially if you mix it up with some other things.

It's both. I'm 5'6, 116lbs, muscular. People on this site would call me underweight, etc. but I'm not. I was a dancer and I watch what I eat, and I also exercise 2-3 times a week, including weights. I haven't done a 'pure barre" class but I imagine it's great if taught properly, even if it's not ballet class.

Adult ballet classes are great and very challenging, and you see all kinds of shapes and sizes.

It's a self-selecting audience.
Rich thin women do Barre

I like Barre and I think it's good for toning an already-slim body but it's not a hard workout like weightlifting or running. It's more like yoga or pilates. So I would expect that women who do barre and look great are combining it with harder workouts or are just very thin from genetics/diet
