25 year olds living in their parents' basements have the most on the line with regards to "zoning &" as these decisions will affect them for much longer than the 75 yo who wants to make sure their community stays the same as it has been for the forty years they've lived there.
So it's not surprising that folks don't want them to vote.

Not necessarily. But yes, renters do obviously contribute indirectly to property taxes. Not that that should be a criterion for being allowed to vote, anyway.
