Tilden is fine for families if they work with kids regularly and kids are not overly influenced by peer group. If not then other middle schools may be better.
Middle schools are generally weaker in most clusters. It's far easier to pick strong elementary and high schools.

Another current Tilden parent and agree with 19:21.
We’ve been in the community since kindergarten and have watched many of our fellow parents take a major step back in parenting their young teens over the last few years.
Middle schoolers are always going to be a difficult group (in general), parents no longer parenting is only going to make that worse. And that is not on the school to fix, even though it falls on them.

AP Gov was a huge adjustment as was APEX Bio. They’re not really doing the kids any favors by making things easy.
They gutted HIGH too. AIM and HiGH may be technically offered but reality is they were watered down
One strength area though is technology electives including option to get tech credit in 8th grade. The tech teachers are a rare bright spot at Tilden

I have an 8th grader at Tilden. They have good friends and have adjusted to being back to regular school. That said, they are also the type to keep their head down and avoid drama. They don’t have tiktok and are therefore don’t know about every fight, viral video, etc. until later than most.

Interesting. My Tilden 8th grader has read books for their English class.
Glad to hear that is changing. It didn’t happen in recent years and parents were angry (and some teachers). It leads to a major shock when the kids get to WJ

Bold part is true. If you don't care much about academics then Tilden is probably fine.

Based on what I hear from families, I think Tilden is surely a lower level than other middle schools in the area. I have family friends in Julius West and their kids are getting far better math education. May be due to AIM offered there.
If I had options, I will avoid Tilden.

If any of the following are options for your family:
- home school
- private school
- virtual academy
- enter middle school lottery
- COSA
- move
Obviously these options don’t work for most but for anyone who can, it is worth considering. I would invest the money/time
resources in the middle school years because Tilden is so awful and then return to public for WJ

The reality is, MS sucks everywhere. Kids hormones going nuts, mcps curriculum for MS sucks, and the BO is just gross
