The rape in Lessons in Chemistry is brutal and comes out of nowhere. Also, there’s a lot of sexism, an attempted murder, and a lot of mourning.

Just because the author made you laugh doesn’t mean it’s lighthearted.

It's an old one, but I'm reading The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe. Women who are working at a publishing company in NYC in the 1950's and their romantic lives. It's really fun.

Wow, I haven’t heard “chick lit” in a while. Do you mean romcoms? I think Bridget Jones’ Diary (which is a Pride and Prejudice retelling) was chick lit.

If you mean romcoms or light, fast reads, check out anything by Katherine Center.

Lessons in Chemistry has rape and death, so maybe not that.
