+1 Mount Rainier is really really safe. Chillum/Bladensburg, not so much.

Where in DC are you moving from? That’s going to impact your sense of safety.

Have you considered Mount Rainier, MD? Similar vibe as TKPK, much cheaper, and locals told me the local police force is really on top of things. We expanded our search to Mount Rainier and were pleasantly surprised.

Parts of Takoma Park are very quiet too. Your description of mayhem and crime in downtown Takoma Park simply doesn't ring true.

We live very close to the Girl and Vine and moved here in 2016 from Columbia Heights. Literally felt a weight off my shoulders compared to there (though we were right near the metro with all the unpleasantness of the plaza drunks and the Hiatt situation). There has been an uptick here this year from basically nothing previously. Two carjackings by scissor and comb and there was a home invasion (front door left open, no one was hurt but obviously extremely distressing). Previously when cars were left unlocked they might be rifled through. There have been more car thefts this year, particularly of Kias. I walked by a broken car window near Elm and Montgomery the other day. I would sign up for the Takoma Park Police alert emails to get a sense of major events. I still feel very safe and it is nice to have our own police force. My kids are too young to walk on their own so I can't comment on that or schools, though.

We are thinking to move to MoCo too, and although Takoma Park may be safer than DC, I am still not Convinced that it is as safe as I want, YMMV.

Where oh where could a person possibly find crime stats? No idea.

If you're considering Takoma Park, check out the groups.io listserv called TakomaPakk! It's a wonderful resource for families (and others) about 90% of Takoma related "stuff" It's easy to join and you can turn the settings to not recieve any e-mails or anything from them. You just go to groups io webpage and join the discussion. Aside from the listserve, to answer your question, it is very safe for kids to walk to and from school, activities, bike, etc. This is of course all during daylight hours. It's a sleepy place at night and I would say one of our biggest issues in terms of crime would be car break-ins.
I would say it's similar to Capitol Hill in that it has a very family-friendly neighborhood feel to it where lots of folks truly care about their neighbors.
There are really great realtors here, though the market is completely crazy. If you're considering the move, reach out to a realtor. They can tell you a lot more. Maybe you will find one that has a current middle or high schooler who can give you more info on specific school options. That being said, the class sizes for the elementary schoolers are reasonable and most parents are generally very happy with the elementary schools. There are lots of great activities for kids afterschool and in the summer too!!! As for violent crime committed by strangers, it's a very safe place to live, come and go from work and school, etc. There are still so many people here who are working from home that some crimes just arent as easy to commit because folks are around and walking their dogs, going for a lunchtime jog, etc. In terms of your children, there are lots of parks and excellent playgrounds here too, which make it an even more fun place to grow up.

I have kids in middle school, and it is quite safe to walk around. My kids walk to school, to their friends' houses, to parks (there are lots), and to the shops in Downtown Takoma and the Takoma Junction. They are out and about all the time. They also ride bikes, although it is more difficult here because of the hills, but they do. I would be a little more nervous if they walked around a lot after dark, but more so because of the cars than worries about being shot or mugged or something.

Yes, kids can walk around safely in TP. You see kids out and about all the time, playing, walking home from school, etc. My tween wanders all over.
