Not true at least for smaller amounts. I forgot to report 2-3k once. They sent a letter a year later Asking to pay taxes that were due plus interest. I don’t remember exactly how much interest but it was definitely less than 5 percent. I don’t think there was a penalty but if there was one it was small

Since it’s gambling winnings, it can be offset by losses. Did you buy lottery tickets? Deduct those, etc.
