OP here. Thanks everyone!

We ended up making the chocolate cake from King Arthur Flour modified to use melted chocolate instead of cocoa. Then I made pear whipped cream from pureed pears that were over-ripe, mixed into whipped cream and a little gelatin to stabilize the whole. It was good, and now I’ve gained an extra pound
