I enjoy handbags and have some luxury pieces, but I've never bought new. Only resale and I prefer vintage. I have a buy it for life mentality, so the splurge on something classic is worth it to me.

I paid about $2000 for a jacket about 10 years ago. I still wear it and still get compliments. Totally worth it!

HHI is $2.5mm salary, plus an additional $2-6m in bonuses depending on the year. I have a few Chanel and Hermes bags, but most of my clothes are middle market - Theory, Reiss, Sandro, etc. All of my jewelry is fake. HHI is around 600k, net worth around 10mm (mine). I love and have a lot of quality jewelry, mostly from family. I'm very picky about fabric and cut, not so much about labels. For example, I wear only leather lined shoes and those tend to be mostly designer. I think I'm middle of the road - Chanel, Bottega, tank francaise, not very high end (kelly, audemars piguet, dubai lifestyle jewelry). I'm also European, so designer items are NBD.

I don’t have high end luxury items. I do have nice US made handbags, but they are around $600. I also have nice clothes and shoes: farragamo and LK Bennett heels, classic well made clothes, nice lingerie. But nothing is high end luxury

My favorite hoodie is Celine. Designer goes great with your wardrobe.

I disagree if it’s something you wear every day it amortized pretty fast for something that doesn’t take up a lot of space, ages well, doesn’t ever break and upgrades your look every single day.

Our HHI is high, over 2M. I am like the lab diamond person, no reason to spend so much on real diamonds when no one can tell the difference. I also wouldn’t buy a high mark up luxury handbag. It’s just not my lifestyle. I cared more about luxury brands or at least name brands when I was in my 20s and didn’t have any money at all. If we constantly went to events and we had a social circle that was very status conscience then maybe. I see it in some people that we know it’s truly still “ keeping up with the joneses”.

Coach is probably not the kind of designer brands OP is talking about. However, you made a good point. My physician friends with HHI and paid off million dollar homes have less designer swag than my realtor and stylists friends with more debt and less income. Imho, its more like a preference than affordability issue.

Just because someone wears designer items doesn't mean they're wealthy. When I was a kid my mom went to a Coach outlet a few times and got a few pieces (that became mine when she died). A friend worked at a place that was like ... a goodwill for designer stuff? I don't know what it's called. But when it was closing she called me and said I should come pick anything I want. I gave them like $100 for thousands of dollars worth of items. I was on food stamps at the time.

My income is five figures. I've never bought designer items, but have over a dozen.
