Losing weight first, then start lifting weights is backwards. Muscle burns through fat like a match to paper. Without muscle, progress will be slow and painful and will eventually stagnate. You need to work on both, at the same time.
As for "ending up stockier" - oy vay...ugh! NO! OP will not be stocky! It is so. so, so, so, hard for women especially to "get stocky" by lifting weights. This is an old, out of date, circa 1985 way of thinking. Enough of that already.
