This response made me laugh so hard my spouse asked me what was so funny, and I read the thread to him. And then he told me about a guy who knows who once bought two brand new Altimas at the same time because he wanted to “keep one nice.”

I’m dying. People are so dumb!

3 adults, one child, one car. We live in DC, WFH, use public transit & Lyft occasionally but mostly plan trips around each other's needs.

Finally a sensible post. What kind of race car?

B-Gen Miata SCCA track car. Had a 993 RS America, but sold it a couple years ago and bought the Miata and a rock-Jeep instead. I prefer the Jeep now, but older son still likes racing.

Don’t get me started on the POS DEF system in the Ford Superduty we haul them with. I will NEVER own another diesel vehicle that requires DEF.

2 adults, 2 of driving age, 2 cars.
One kid at college (does not need a car), one kid off to college in the fall (cars not allowed the first 2 years).
Adults carpool to work or one adult works from home if it works better logistically for the day.
HS senior drives to and from school (or gets dropped off/picked up if needed)

We have been doing this for over a year now and while it's challenging, we have not had a single day that couldn't be worked out.
Holding out for that 3rd car for a while longer. 4th car won't be needed for at least 2-3 more years.

You mean you have a teenager who will soon be driving? Or just a teenager?

If hes getting his license soon, wait to see how it plays out.

How will he get to school and activities during the week? If the parents and the nanny cart him around, you won't need another car. If it seems like it will be easier logistically for him to drive himself around, you'll need another car.

My parents got a 3rd car for me part way through my junior year. I lived out of the school boundaries so no school bus, both parents worked, I had to get to school. Even if I could ride the bus, I had a job after school, and hung out with friends a lot. I can't imagine my parents having to drive me everywhere. And I was the only kid at home by then, no other kids to haul around.

One car for 2 adults and 1 child. The car is 17 years old. No intention of getting a second car.

We also have 3 bicycles which get a lot of use. No CO2 emissions. But this is not enough to offset the huge emissions of our neighbors who own 3 SUVs and a 5100 square foot house.

Obviously OP has other kids besides the teenager and they doesn’t make the teenager act as a nanny. OP, if it makes your life easier for the teenager to have car and you can afford it, get the car. Otherwise I guess the nanny and the teenager can share a car but that feels like that wouldn’t work- except weekends when presumably the car is sitting.

What do you think?

We have three cars for two adult drivers but one car is really old/fun/not daily car.

When our kids drive, they can use ours.

Is the nanny hot? What I wouldn't have given for a hot nanny when I was a teenager. I think I've seen movies with that plot.

Occaisional challenges during fall/winter/spring breaks + summer. Not sure what to do with 3rd car next year, but it'll sit around a lot

Two for parents. One teen owns a car (self-purchase); the other doesn’t.

And if they're beater cars, OP, you're not doing it right. Sigh. What are the neighbors going to think??? Social shunning is in your future!!!

BTW, it's either a new Jeep or a Tesla for your teen, depending on how woke you are. When your kid totals it on the first day, you buy a new one.
