I grew up in California; moved out 25 years ago. The state just gets worse and worse every year.

But there is no way I would send my child to any school in California.



Standford and USC are the two schools I would send my kid in CA.

Know a freshman there this year. Complete party school (not just weekend parties but every night of the week major partying) and gobs of money. Students in the dorms are eating every meal out and expensive designer clothing (ie $600. vests and Gucci belts galore) are totally the norm. Think twice before sending your kid to a school where wealthy entitlement is the norm. (FTR, the student re-telling these stories comes from a 1% background from out of state and even she is surprised and slightly disillusioned by it all). 90k for the school year including freshman room and board.

I really wonder if the second look will be a true second look. They have so many applications - they have likely already scored each of the EA applications so they will only second look the top end of the remaining EAs (both academic chops and shaping the class) - no reason why they would go back and read every one of the remaining 38k applications again....

I think a main reason they did EA this year was to unburden the reading time from Jan 15 to March 31. And they effectively did that. My guess is that 10-20% of the remaining 38k applications will be read again at RD cycle.


The EA pool is likely the stronger pool however because students have to apply EA to be considered for merit scholarships, and USC gives a good number. uSC has long been accepting about 10 percent early unofficially so this seems to be more of a slight extension of that than true EA.


Yes, USC has a big endowment and uses their $$ well to attract top students (and football players).

Have they shut the side door? You can kind of understand why so many parents were willing to shell out what wasn't a massive amount of money to them.

It's not unusual that a state schools such as U Of South Carolina is this popular. UCLA receives over 100,000. Many state universities are the only game in town.

The actual campus is beautiful though and the facilities are amazing.

USC is not exactly in an amazing location in LA (yes, the weather is still great).

Their Cinematic Arts programs are amazing. If you want to get into showbiz, USC is probably the best place to go.
