We have a 7 seater Y and love it. Either the 6 yo will sit in the way back or I’ll sit there sideways. Wouldn’t be great for a long trip but for our purposes it works just fine.

We love our Tesla. There are 6 Tesla owners in our family and none of us had ever had a problem with the car. We can take our family of 4 (two over 6 foot) with all of our golf clubs and luggage in the Model 3. The question about cost savings barely makes sense because I couldn't even tell you what it costs to charge as we see no difference in our electric bill at all. The most we ever paid to charge on the road was $8, I think, and it was ready to go by the time we had all used the restroom and bought water.

If the Y doesn't work for your family size (I've never been in one) and a Suburban or Yukon is too big (I really like both of those when you need a huge vehicle), the Highlander Hybrid has been fine. Gas milage isn't great compared to a good German car, but better than a truck. There is very little space for luggage when the third row is up though, so we have to use a roof rack for vacations. And the third row is not comfortable for an adult, barely works for a teen.

If you need a comfortable 7 seater, and not a mini van, it will be a very large SUV. Those are your only options, but it seems you also don’t want a very large SUV?

Mid size SUV’s generally have 7 seat option but the back seats are tight. So it’s either large SUV, mini van, or mid-size SUV with a tighter fit. Pick one of the 3, but not a model Y since it’s way too small for what you want.

Worth looking at the PHEV coming online now. They have EV motors that can go 25-50 miles on electric (more than enough for most people driving locally) and they offer more cargo and seating room than current EVs. We were in the market for a new car and could not find anything that had remotely adequate cargo or seating. We could not stomach spending 50-70k for a car in whose backseat no full size adult would be willing to ride.

I am going from a coupe to a SUV for our first family car. Everyone with a Tesla told me not to buy a Tesla.

My husband bought an S, a number of years ago when they were hard to come by and he paid about 120k. The car was good for the first couple years, but would have a reoccurring problem that they just never fixed properly. It was a lemon. The customer service at the dealership was lousy and not what you would expect for that price point. He finally sold it and bought one of the new, cheap models and really likes it. Something with the warranty and selling it back made him buy a Tesla again. I know someone else who had a lemon of an older Tesla. You will save on gas but you will still need to stop to recharge after about 4 hours if I remember correctly. Anyway, I’m not a fan of Elon or the crappy customer service offered for a luxury vehicle. I think a lot of people are excited by the electric Volvo SUV. But I can’t vouch for it. GL.

You did say “…. the van is pushing 200K miles and needs to be replaced soon” and then you mention model Y or other EVs.
It sounded like you loved your van, but was asking about the model Y. Posters assumed that if they couldn’t positively recommend the model Y
For you that they should make other suggestions - hence great vans come to mind for someone who admittedly loved theirs until it “fell apart”.

We had a minivan in the past (Sienna) and now have a Model Y. We love the Model Y but it does add time to longer trips (super charging takes longer than getting gas) and more planning is involved. It is NOT a good car if you need 7 seats. Assuming you have captain's chairs in the minivan, you also can't beat the convenience or the height of those for putting kids in and out of car seats and all things related to car seats. The Tesla is only bench seats and they are significantly lower than a minivan captains chairs.

If you need 7 seats for a tall family, your best non mini-van bet is a Suburban or Yukon XL but that will drive your gas costs in the opposite direction of your goal!

OP. Thanks! The suburban and Yukon are huge! I don't think we can accommodate that footprint in the garage. We'll have to revisit those again this year.

The Teslas now are not a good “deal”. They are cheaper than they were, but they were overpriced before for what it was. Neat car, but They have a lot of issues. They were new age, couldn’t keep up with demand, and had a promising future from what the CEO claimed at the time. But at this point, it looks like the gig may be up, other brands are catching up, there are more EV options, and tesla’s brand/value may drop even more.

DH had one on order this summer. For the options and model he chose, They gave him a 6-8 month estimated delivery date. He was already on the fence, but looking at the used ones for sale he figured he could sell it for at least what he paid - probably more - if he changed his mind. Anyway, he came to his senses and canceled his order 2 months ago.. He checked last week; the used market has plummeted and for orders placed now the EDD is only 3-6 weeks!
