Gave ours a brand new Jetta this past summer, since VW was not marking up certain models up during price gauging/chip shortage. We did have to buy sight unseen and put a deposit down with the dealer when the car was being built. We're paying insurance/car payments/pre-paid for service up to 40K. She pays for gas and any deductibles if she gets into a wreck. She keeps the car after it's paid off, but will be responsible for insurance until the day she graduates from undergrad. She totaled our CREAM PUFF beater mid-year as a HQ senior and we didn't allow her to have a car as a freshman; punishment for texting and wrecking the car. She absolutely TREASURES this car. It is also a stripped down manual transmission, so she learned how to drive a stick shift in about two weeks and no longer texts in the car.

Refused to buy. Just didn’t think a car should be handed to a college kid. Result: they bought their own. It’s so old and without updated safety features, that I stress the drives to and from college. With graduation on the horizon, now looking forward to buying them a used but newer and safer car to get to work.

DD has inherited Our former babysitter car, a 2012 Pilot, when she got her license. She wanted a school where she could take her car. Parking is inexpensive and she typically only drives on weekends to the drugstore, grocery and restaurants. We love that she can drive herself home for breaks. We pay for one tank of gas a month and maintenance. It’s running great despite being older, hope it’s ok through graduation when we’ll probably get her a new car.
