Check out Brightview West End in downtown Rockville (really liked the concierge level) or The Seneca, also in Rockville but brand new and has a “resort” feel to it.

My parents moved in 2020 too. Enjoy independant living for the most part but not impressed with skilled nursing. Understaffed. We had to bring in private help. We would look elsewhere if it were needed again

I have heard some good things but the area has really declined since the mall closed.

We liked Collington a lot too, but for its independent living. Wasn't too impressed with its memory care section when we visited two years ago. Love that it's in an arboretum with a pond. It's less convenient for people who want to spend a lot of time in Montgomery Co. though, having to deal with beltway traffic.

In Kensington, there's Modena Reserve (where my mother is) and Kensington Park. Modena is a nice new place, modern, so it doesn't feel like an old person's home. It's mostly independent living, but there is a floor for assisted living and one for memory care. Some of the people in independent living stay there when they need assistance, and just have attendants taking care of them there. They have regular exercise classes and a nice (small) gym with personal trainers.

There is also a Sunrise on Battery Lane in downtown Bethesda. I don’t know about a gym in the building but the local area has many that he could join.

Isn't that PG County? When I was looking, it mentioned that it's a short hop to New Carrollton, which is nice if you want to travel via Amtrak

My 88 year old father moved to Ingleside King Farm in 2020. He loves it. Great gym, plenty of sharp people, lots of ways to get involved. Also has memory care and a nursing home. Not cheap, but worth every penny according to him. He’s having a really nice experience.

If he likes 5 star living I would see if there is a nice gym walking distance. Also, ask if there are any plans to renovate the gym. Realistically, it's not going to be that many years of using every type of gym equipment he likes so if that is his only complaint, I would just get a gym membership elsewhere or see if he can adjust to the gym.

Do they have memory care and is there any family history of dementia. By age 90 a decent percentage of people will have dementia regardless of family history. If they don't have memory care, ask if you can hire a personal aide and what leve of care is just too much. If a parent develops what I call "pleasant dementia" where maybe the person becomes more childlike, but is sweet and easy-going enough it's easy to stay in AL with an aide. If your parent, like mine, develops combative, paranoid and hostile dementia, good luck with that. Wandering dementia is an issue too. *These aren't actual names of dementias just names of issues that come with it .
