I am curious how this is different than students who wear, say, cat ears?

It’s middle school. Some are clinging to their childhood still. Others are trying to shock adults. They’re all trying on identities.

In college, I had a gay friend who liked to wear skirts.

One day he and I were walking around campus. Him in a skirt and me in normal college kid outfit of jeans and a t-shirt. A group of frat boys walked by and stared at us, daggers in their eyes. Without missing a beat my friend turned to me and hissed, “cross-dresser!”

if their underwear isn't visible, whatever. of all the ways to rebel or assert one's uniqueness, this seems temporary and harmless. Only concern would be in a shop class or something else where it could get caught in machinery, or a specialized activity like a choir or sport where kids are all dressed to match.
