You don’t know what you are talking about. A credit inquiry brings down your credit score. I doubt you ever bought any car.

If you read the publication linked here, you can still decline to provide your ssn. In this case, IRS instructs the business to file the form without the ssn.

You do know they already know your SS most places.

My old company uses Plaid combined with Lexus Nexus.

When you tell me SS it is to verify identity in that it matches what I already know

I actually DID buy a car with a bag of cash and no one asked for my SSN. But this was a few years ago so maybe it wasn’t a thing yet.
