I’m surprised it took that long. My first grader calls it the “f word” and apologizes when she accidentally puts up her middle finger since it’s “saying the f word with your hands”

Be a parent. Explain what it is and move on. Why are so many parents scared of teachable moments?

Your kids are going to learn so many things before you hope. F*** is just one. Years ago, parents used to be horrified when their early ES kids learned about 9-11 from classmates. Your kids’ friends have older siblings and families with different ways of communicating and different experiences that expose them to things at different rates and they share.

When my son was in kindergarten at an Alexandria City public school he walked home from the bus stop with some kids in 5th or 6th grade. One day he said to me: What's a f***ing n**ger?

He had heard one kid call another that.

I took him out of that school.

He's an adult now and pretty much never uses profanity.

Mother : Alright, where did you hear that word?

Ralphie as an Adult : [narrating] Now, I had heard that word at least ten times a day from my old man. He worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium; a master. But, I chickened out and said the first name that came to mind.

Pp here. My 10 yr old asked what it really meant…I told her “you know how the the sh word really means poop but that’s not how people use it? Well that word refers to a person who has sex, but it’s used as an insult.” She said “so Larla thinks her brother has sex? He’s in third grade!” And I said, “no, it’s just that that’s what it means literally.” She said something like “can we please not talk about this anymore!!”

Two weeks ago my 5 yr old / kindergartener said, “what’s a fu**er?” I said, “just to make sure I heard you correctly, so I can give you an answer, can you tell me where you heard it?” She said, referring to her first-grade friend in aftercare, “Larla whispered it to me on the playground and told me it’s what she calls her brother.” 😂

I said “it’s a mean thing to call someone and so we don’t use that word in our house” and I haven’t heard about it since.

Yes, I also taught my kid those words early. He knows they’re bad words and we don’t use them (unless it’s by accident!)

There was a kids podcast about “bad words” and why they’re “bad” that was interesting. Maybe it was But Why?

My three year old knows it and knows how to say it correctly in context 😅😅
