We sent him to a more academic pre-K program at a Catholic grade school for the year between preschool and kindergarten - he got the benefit of another year of social growth (which was needed) in a slightly more academic environment that felt a bit more like kindergarten. The next year we moved him to kindergarten at our parish school, where he remains. Our parish school gave us the options of doing two years of kindergarten there, but I felt that he would feel like he was being "held back," so we opted for the different environment for the pre-K year. No regrets with our decision. I think he was academically ready for K right after he finished preschool but definitely benefitted from the year of social growth.

Sexism? Really? As a cohort girls develop mentally faster than boys. Boys develop physically faster than girls. From a broad strokes perspective it’s a reasonable thing to say. But as always, individual circumstances apply…

We were in a similar situation but after meeting with the head of school she pulled our daughter forward a year. She had little concern about the learning aspects (she was already ahead because of what we do at home), wasn’t worried about size (our daughter is much taller than those her age). Had some concern about the social & maturity aspects but suggested we try it for a couple weeks. We did and it worked.
