I took my son to a private speech therapist before finding out about the county one through public schools. I preferred the latter one.

OP, you should be asking your EI providers these questions and insist that they give you answers or direct you to the person who can help you.


Why ignore this advice? Seeking therapies for your child is a good idea but nothing will actually be “fixed”, ya know?

WFH, he started daycare at 18 months. Have noticed lack of expressive and receptive language issues from the beginning but pediatrician wasn’t that concerned at that time. Just at 18 months asked to get early intervention just to be ‘safe’. But I can tell he has no words, no pointing and no waving, leading by hand etc. I am worried and don’t understand why pediatrician chose to ignore all these signs ?

Many kids catch up on their own if they show delays at these very early ages, so often pediatricians will take a wait and see approach. I don’t know where you’re located but in MoCo you can self-refer to early intervention if you have concerns. No need for referrals.

Besides contacting early intervention, if you can afford it, start private speech therapy now.It can take several months to get an EI team out and then it takes a while for their providers to reach out and start intervention.

Just my experience. Back then, my 22 months old did not talk a word, no babble, no pointing, make some eye contact, engage with toys/people, nod/shake head and really happy, ended up with ASD/ADHD diagnosis but his speech caught up a ton by 3.5 years old.

Make an appointment with your pediatrician. Also, get on wait lists for development pediatricians as appointments are 6 to 12 months out.

Neither. Early intervention assigned an educator to us and speech therapy

Get on the waitlist for a development ped now.
