Could you instead get a gift certificate to the store that carries them (e.g., Dick's) and then she can pick it out herself? And you aren't giving her a gift that your sister specifically said no to?

My freshman DD and many of her friends also have the Borealis. I agree with the idea to get that and include a gift receipt and just let her know you absolutely won’t be offended if she wants to trade it. What an awesome aunt!!

There's 0 chance of my sister getting it, they have 4 kids and are tight with cash. My niece is getting a new iphone to replace her old one which is no longer supported. She's also getting her some clothing that my niece needs. My sister has complained to me about the cost. But I do want to get her the right backpack. I thought it was a model that was very common, like Nike AF1s that every teen has. But maybe not.


Maybe I’m the one who’s weird but if you know her mom has said it’s too expensive I think it’s wrong/passive-aggressive to buy it as a surprise. If a relative bought my kids AF1s without asking me I wouldn’t be happy.


I didn’t get that the mom thought she shouldn’t have it because of the price- it was that they had spent the money allocated for her Christmas presents on other things. The mom is getting her a new iPhone (when clearly there are cheaper choices) so I don’t think they are against expensive items altogether.
