Subject: I don’t want to have to go to church with in laws for appearances
Um, OK? When we go up to see them for Christmas, my ILs insist that people attend their super-late church service so that we can see MIL sing in the choir. I went twice to be polite, and now I no longer go. They huff and puff and…and so what?

My parents are very religious, but also very stubborn and l turned out stubborn but not religious. When l turned 18 l told them no more church and they knew there was no changing my mind, and they still wanted a relationship with me so they accepted it pretty quick

Sometimes we do things just to be supportive of others. I’ve “wasted” hours plenty of times in my life, but each time it meant so much to the person who asked for my company.
But if you truly hate organized religion, just don’t go. If it’s going to such an extreme sacrifice to you that you’ll leave angry, I’m guessing the in-laws would rather you skip it.

For a 90 year old, I'd go to a Buddhist temple or a Mosque and pretend if that's what it took to cheer them up
