As someone who has owned bell bottoms (1992-1993 early grunge), skater/rave (1997-1999) boot cut (2000-2006), and trouser (2006-2007) and sticks pretty closely to these trends, the current trend of "elephant leg" (a new term to me) is not the same as any of those. Obviously different from boot leg and bell bottom, which are tight through the thighs and flare out. The current trend is different than rave jeans - not sure how - but I guess much higher waist, plus the pockets are very different. WHich is why several previous posters said they are flattering on your butt and waist. The rave jeans had the huge pockets with diagonal lines that went part way down your thigh (to carry your wallet made out of duct tape and to show off your wallet chain). So i'd say that's the primary difference.

But agree that this term "elephant leg" is synonymous with the current understanding of "wide leg".

Though interestingly, "wide leg" was also used in the 90s to describe the rave jeans, and in the late aughts to refer to trouser jeans. So "wide leg" seems to just mean whatever style is currently in that is not form fitting.
