I'm 45 and from NY. Smoked from 18 to 32. Both my parents were smokers and my older sister still smokes.

Why isn't there an appetite suppressant as effective as a cigarette and coffee?

There is. It’s called Ozempic. Much more expensive than cigarettes and coffee though.

I only smoked a short time in my youth, and never that much, but I absolutely miss it! Such a pleasant meditative exercise.

I haven’t smoked in over a decade and I saw a guy reading his newspaper, drinking a hot cup of coffee with a cigarette on a rainy day recently and I was like wow that looks so good.

I miss being young, the ritual and effect of smoking, the bonding with other smokers. The smoker group tended to be more interesting types.

I am also very glad to have quit while I was a young adult because of the harmful long term effects. And happy not to be surrounded by smokers.

I am 49- haven’t smoked since late 20s. I recently have had a sudden, irrational urge to start again. I am obviously not going to because it is unhealthy and gross. I did bum a cigarette off a younger work colleague a few years ago and could only take one puff before I felt ill.

I think it has something to do with the multi-sensorial ritualistic aspect of smoking that I miss. The unwrapping a fresh box, the whiff of the tobacco when you flipped up the top, sliding out the cigarette, the click of the lighter, sound of the flame hitting the end of the cigarette and that first inhale, exhale. It was very satisfying and comforting in that way.

I was a super pretentious smoker too- Dunhills, Gauloises and then when with my gal pals, Parliament 100s (so 90s).

Late 30s, lived in Europe and then the Midwest when I smoked.

I smoked from age 18 to 30 and I totally agree. I would describe it like heartbreak. When you are newly single, everywhere you look you see happy couples laughing and holding hands. When you quit smoking, you suddenly see beautiful and cool people smoking everywhere you go.

10+ years after quitting, it’s like thinking fondly of an old boyfriend. I don’t want to see or talk to him now just like I don’t want to ever smoke again - but sometimes I’ll feel wistful? Sentimental? Like “we had some good times and that feels like a lifetime ago”.

i really miss the ritual of it, i quit 12 years ago at 30. i miss ducking out of restaurants and bars for intimate convos with friends while puffing away. i loved the feeling of taking that first drag after a long day of work. i did some of my best thinking, best producing while ripping through cigs. all that said i wouldn't touch them again. i always felt like death the next morning and now i'm one of those crunchy healthy types (insert eye roll) lol.

Quitting was so hard that I have zero desire to smoke anymore. But I do miss never being hungry.

This isn’t true. It depends how much damage there has been, but lungs do heal.
