This is our setup too and I also really like it. We moved in when the kids were six and eight, so we didn't have the baby and toddler years here. But for elementary age kids, I think they actually enjoy having their own "kid floor" all to themselves.

My kids have their own bathroom upstairs in between their bedrooms. They are 11 and 13 and still barely use it. Our room with en suite bath is on the main floor and that’s where they head after waking every morning. It works fine. I remember wishing I didn’t have to walk upstairs for nighttime feedings when they were babies. But that passed and it’s a distant memory.

I love that we are on a different level than kids. We are on main level and kids (5 yrs and 9 months) are upstairs. Oldest is a super heavy sleeper and we don't hear from him until he gets up to go to the bathroom in the morning. Youngest is a light sleeper so its nice that we can do things at night without feeling like we're going to wake her up.

We had two different houses with the MBR on the third floor and children’s bedrooms in the second. It was never an issue. We had baby monitors when the kids were young. Door chimes and Ring cameras cover the doors when they’re the “sneaking out” age (although that was never an issue for us either).

I forgot to add that my mother said she had to spank me several times, because when I was able to climb out of my crib I would walk downstairs in the dark from the third floor to the first in order to climb into bed with her and my dad. She was afraid I would fall down the stairs. If you do this be sure to always have night lights on.

I was born and lived in a house like this. Children were on the second and third floor. Parents were on the first floor. I prefer everyone to be on the same floor.

This. We considered a home similar to this one with the primary room on the first level and kids upstairs but even so we were hesitant.

We ruled out floor plans like this. I was concerned about fires, break ins, kids waking up in the middle of the night/not hearing them etc. If our kids were older, a first floor master with the kids upstairs would probably be ok. But for younger children, no way, not for us.
