My son is in 8th grade. He wears the following every single day like it is a uniform:

Under armor joggers in black, navy or dark grey.

Under armor athletic shirts in white or dark colors. (Boldest color is dark red)

Under armor or Nike hoodies

Nike white socks

Nike sneakers.

My kid likes Uniqlo, but not the massively oversized stuff. No logos, no graphics. None. Hates them. Even a tiny Nike swoosh may be shunned, though he likes their “club” sweats with banded leg opening the best — he fits a small but likes these in medium.

Everything is loose and relaxed, but not oversized.

Wears jeans, Carhartt pants, corduroys, only rarely sweat pants but loves sweatshirts. Gap pants fit him well, HM is good, Prana, some Urban Outfitters, also loves Muji. Flannel shirts. Has a loose corduroy shirt (*not* a shacket) that he wears often. Patagonia nano puff that can easily shove into his bag.

OP, what’s the kid into and what does he wear now? I wouldn’t try to change his style. That seems intrusive and over reaching. Start where he is and add a few newer options.

Hi everyone! OP again. Any updates to teen boy fashion I should know about?

I'm seeing a lot of corduroy pants...but are teen boys wearing those? Senior in high school.

American Eagle is great for tall skinny kids. This was the only place my kid could easily get 32x36 jeans that he liked.

My DS has discovered H&M. To me it seems like the have more variety of sizes - shirts come in slim fit, regular and whatever loose fit is called. And their stuff seems to appeal to him in terms of logos on tshirts and hoodies. Now when I take him there, I notice HS age guys, young adults and the Dad set all shopping there.

How about you print a few pics of options and ask him to just tell you the general direction?

I have a high school son and he wears almost exclusively hoodies with shorts or joggers. Tiny logos of brands, the smaller the better.

He likes Old Navy plain mens t-shirts, I think because they are comfortable and have no logo at all.

My son is in college now, but liked his simple Patagonia fleece and lightweight jacket. He’s pretty outdoorsy and likes things made of recycled materials and tries to avoid fast fashion stuff. He would not have wanted a Nike hoodie at all, so I think you need to think about what he likes and his personality. A kid who is into music or theater will have a different style than a sporty kid or an outdoorsy kid and so on.

Agree with others, no rugby shirts. The nice thing right now is that the boys are keeping it simple.

I think it's nice- this time of year, hoodies and some sort of athletic pant/jogger or a pair of jeans. That's it. My DS16 wears American Eagle jeans or simple sweatpants, plain hoodie with a subtle logo. Flannel/plaid is in now- you can probably get an inexpensive one at Old Navy.

I would get flannel/plaid button up- I notice some boys put a hoodie underneath it for warmth. You can get subtle plaid, especially if your DS isn't into clothing. You might look at Vans tennis shoes or Nike Air Force-- those are really "in" right now and again, they're subtle. I think the main thing is to help with fashion but keep it comfortable and low key.

My DS found a number of hoodies and tees at foot locker.

American Eagle is popular with my sons
They don't like things with large logos or graphics.

I live right at the HS bus stop. The above is what all the boys have on. When it’s warmer, they switch to athletic shorts.

OP, the PPs are right. My DS and DD started middle school, so younger than your stepson. We just moved to a new school district and I wanted to make sure they fit in so I tried to pick clothing to help them blend in. With DD, we got some fun clothing options, but for my DS, it couldn't have been easier. His closet is now filled with hoodies, t-shirts, and joggers of various kinds. He just sort of mixes the ones he wears together. I'd like to get him better stuff, but it's true that most of the other kids dress just like him.
