There’s no way to verify statements such as these. It’s interesting how the JMU boosters have come out this admissions season. I cannot shake recalling the number of times my neighbor‘s son told me that the EMTs were at his dorm yet again for multiple cases of alcohol poisoning.

All of the teachers and counselors in LCPS and FCPS seemed to be JMU grads. (True)

One of the worst teachers my kid had was, you guessed it, a JMU grad! (True)

See how this works?

How much of a helicopter are you? Or are you just very, very, nosy that you know where all of the counselors and teachers went to college? I have kids in HS and have no idea where their teachers went to school.

That would be inequitable.

I have a feeling that guidance counselors assure this is a very self selected applicant pool

Lots of JMU grads in the DMV. Working alongside grads from UVA, VT, W&M and other fine schools.

My DS goes there and is having a great experience.

5 people from my graduating class at a DE parochial HS went to JMU (2 of them from my close friend group). It actually wound up being my second choice in the end after I was accepted to the honors program. When I came for my tour, 3 of my tour guides (we had a couple trainees tagging along) were from DE. Weird considering it is a VA state school. Anyway, my 2 good friends are both gainfully employed-one lives in Ashburn with her fellow JMU grad husband.

I think it is a fine school.

NOW, it definitely has risen in prestige and is much harder to get into. Several of my friends (both in and OOS) have kids there and all of them absolutely love it. For some kids it was their first choice, for others they didn't get into Tech so they went to JMU. I have a 10th grader for whom I think JMU would be a great fit so I am very attracted by its rise.

I have also never met anyone who went there that also didn't love it. It just seems to have so many positives.

+1. I grew up here in NOVA and I have so many friends who went to JMU. All of them loved the experience and are successful adults (some very successful!). I also have several friends with kids there and they are also really happy. I actually can’t think of anyone I know who wasn’t happy at JMU.

Op here. I just wanted to thank everyone for their thoughtful responses! I was so excited to see them when I checked the thread. JMU is definitely a surprise front runner for us and I’m glad to hear of so many positive experiences.

JMU is a great school with friendly students, engaging professors, and plenty of extracurricular activities to get involved in — it is very hard to feel alone at JMU. I have yet to meet a JMU alum or current student who has anything but positive things to say about the school, so they are doing something right!
