Girls usually lack the necessary aptitude (spacial ability etc.) and do not want to do the heavy lifting so they tend to stay away from clubs that require lot of time and effort. They gravitate towards tutoring, coding for women, cultural activities etc.

Most TJ kids participate in activities/clubs for the joy of participation and not to brag about them on college apps.

It is not an all male club since there is one female also.
The reason that there are not many women in STEM is because the majority culture (White culture) that has the maximum resources available to them mainly value girls for looks. As a result, it is more likely for White teenage girls to be in non-STEM programs than in STEM programs. Asians of the same SES on the other hand will encourage their daughters to get into STEM field because a) barrier to entry is higher and b) education is priortized over looks and c) it provides them with some guaranteed financial security to have a better life.
However, Asian-American female students cannot make up for the lack of interest of other groups. The reason there are so few women in STEM is because Asian-Americans are a tiny minority in US. I hope this answers your question.
That’s not it for TJ though. 2/3 of the student body is Asian.

So, it’s a reasonable answer in general for society. However, TJ is a STEM school. So every girl there wants to be in STEM. So why did only 1 decide to take this opportunity? And, even more importantly, why didn’t a person of authority (teacher) notice and make an extra effort to recruit women? Or, maybe the teacher did make that effort - and they said no- which returns to the why didn’t the females want to join?

My DD at TJ was not interested in doing this particular project. She has a full plate with other STEM activities. As an Indian-American she has no dearth of female role models within our own community who are in the STEM field. Most of her "aunties" and female relatives are doctors, engineers and IT professionals!

How about pushing the girls to do more in middle school, if you want to see more girls in STEM.
That said, it's not like the girls are at the bottom of the class at TJ. They just didn't want to do this particular club. Take a look at the other clubs.
