Places still do this?? That's crazy with where we are with Covid. We moved out of the DC area and no one does this where we are now. I haven't seen one since we moved.

This is OP. This is the best explanation I’ve seen so far. I’m baffled why intelligent friends of mine say they will only eat outside but are fine with a tent, I’m baffled why restaurants provide this option (although obviously it must be because people want to sit there). I don’t understand any of it.

I’m in Arlington and the tents I’m thinking of are not 3 sided. They are fully enclosed, like at Fireworks Pizza.

I hate it because I actually do only eat outside, and on sunny and warm-ish days, one could eat outside even in November or December, but not if all of the outside tables have been tented up.

Same here. This is a reasonable way to provide more air flow, but retain a little of the heat from the patio heaters.
