+1. That's the second incident of bad RM students bad behavior during open lunch posted on this board in the past month or so. I said it then and I say it now, the principal needs to start cracking down. Find the kids who are misbehaving and forbid them to leave during open lunch. All these kids need to start having consequences.

Agree. I am also an RM parent. Principal needs to address this. It can’t be hard to figure out who the kids are and crack down. The kids who are causing trouble should not be allowed to leave school during lunch for 30 days.
Open lunch is a privilege. If kids are abusing that privilege, the kids need to lose that option.
How exactly is the principal going to prevent kids from leaving during lunch? What type of incidents would warrant not letting the students leave? What would happen if the students didn't report to lunch detention? Would MCPS support expelling students if they leave anyway? RM has thousands of students. It would take a huge amount of time and effort to actually make this happen.
Why can't in-lunch detention be a thing? That's what they at least need to attempt.
They have lunch detention. No one goes and it is almost impossible to enforce. Ask me how I know.
A school district that is big on RJ is not going to punish certain groups of kids for behaving badly outside of school during lunch hours. Please.

Om's Indian restaurant at Ritchie Center has an RM lunch special my DC gets. $5 (or used to be) for a lunch special.

Umm, what? The principal can absolutely revoke privileges for certain students.

I doubt the surrounding businesses would be happy about closed lunch. The Panera, Starbucks and that pizza place probably get half their business from those kids. I can’t tell you how much money I am pouring into those places because the cafeteria at RM is unusuble and the vending machines have been broken all year.

The school is overcrowded. My DCs tell me that the lunch line is so long that they never get a chance to buy lunch. There is no room for all the students to eat in the cafeteria, and if the whether is bad, they'd all be stuck inside in the hallways for lunch. I could see that being a safety hazard.
If you want to not have open lunch, then you'll need to pony up and expand the school right now because Crown HS won't open until 2027.
Oh, that will be great on half-days. The Crown area has way more security cameras. I can see the news headlines now.

I don’t like the burgers, but once every 6-8 weeks, I grab a roast beef with cheese from the 355 or Aspen Hill RR. So good with the raw onion from the fixins bar!
