Many Cubans are white though. Direct descendants of Europeans

But in the US people use the one drop rule. White southerners don't think of Cubans as white. No matter how European they are. They are just as likely to be discriminated against as most other wealthy Latinos. Which is to say less likely than dark skinned Mexicans and Guatemalans, but more likely than people who don't speak Spanish and read as fully Americanized.

I hate to pick on a dead person but no she didn't. She was hoping to make it to the US with him. Her death was an accident. If someone put a gun to her head and said I'll shoot you in exchange for raising your son in the US, then you'd be justified in saying so.

She risked his life too, he could have very easily be the one to drown.
