A 8 week old puppy is like a BABY, they can't be alone for more than a couple of hours, the housebreaking stage can take weeks or even months. So no little puppies if no one can be at home 3 days/week.

A 4-6 month old puppy is like a tween/teenager. Hopefully already housebroken, but will be bored and potentially destructive if home alone for hours during the day. A dog walker ($20-30 per walk are prices I've seen) can be an option but you really aren't going to know your dog's personality until you live with him/her for a while.

So if you want a really young puppy, definitely not now. Maybe with an older dog, and honestly, the older (2 yrs +) the better for you.

A plush dog is perfect. It doesn't care if you leave it alone, doesn't need to be trained or have high vet bills. Plus you can hug it.
