The title was DC Council, who to vote for if my top concern is crime. My answer was vote Republican. A Republican Navy Vet was running. I would bet a dollar he would share OPs concern for crime, and had some ideas for addressing it that might be helpful with the current crime spike/carjackings/kids dying wave we are in. If OP we're happy with the way crime.is currently being addressed, OP wouldn't be asking who to vote for. I don't think this is really hard to understand.

I agree with the earlier poster that it is the policies enacted by all the successive conservative DC mayors (or city council) that is to blame for the crime problem in DC and Baltimore……..👍

Conservative policies are what created the crime in the first place. Locking everyone up may help in the short term, but crime is a direct result of poverty, lack of education, and lack of parental involvement. You know what actually creates a criminal? Uneducated parents who aren't around to teach kids right from wrong, who aren't around to help with homework and read to their kids, who can't afford extracurriculars.

If you want anything more than a short term fix, the only true solution is to vote for progressives who will raise wages, increase access to education, improve public transportation, fight for paid parental leave and requiring PTO from employers, build more housing, and increase funding to social programs that give low income families a safety net. Republicans want wage slaves working 3 part-time jobs with no benefits for $7 an hour. Republicans want to destroy the public school system. Republicans want to gut social safety nets. Republicans want to ban abortion and force people to have kids they can't afford.

Progressives want you to get a living wage with generous benefits and a work-life balance so that you can be home with your kids at night. Progressives want free college so struggling kids can have hope of breaking out of the cycle of poverty. Progressives want you to be able to practice family planning and delay childrearing until you're mentally and financially ready. Sorry it's not going to fix things overnight, but it's the only way to truly fix things instead of kicking the can a few years down the road and creating an even worse problem when "tough on crime" policies create a permanent criminal underclass unable to do anything but crime because of their criminal record and years or even decades of time out of the workforce in prisons that are designed to punish instead of rehabilitate.

TL;DR: Progressives would rather focus on other things and pretend crime is not a real issue.

No, Progressives would rather focus on the root causes instead of pandering with bandaids that ultimately make the problem worse. Republicans would rather focus on culture wars instead of pretending poverty, healthcare, and education are not real issues.

But hey, if you had the ability to think critically and enact long-term planning you wouldn't be a Republican, so it's completely understandable you don't get it.

Truth is we need to do both. Fixing "the root causes" will take 30-50 years until some future generation is hopefully less likely to engage in crime. That doesn't help if you get mugged tonight, so we also need to hold today's criminals accountable and keep everyone safe right now.

I hope you vote for Nadeau. She’s particularly hard on criminals and supports mandatory minimums.
