Progressives want you to be able to practice family planning and delay childrearing until you're mentally and financially ready. Sorry it's not going to fix things overnight, but it's the only way to truly fix things instead of kicking the can a few years down the road and creating an even worse problem when "tough on crime" policies create a permanent criminal underclass unable to do anything but crime because of their criminal record and years or even decades of time out of the workforce in prisons that are designed to punish instead of rehabilitate.
