This and it’s why I love the place!

DC people (men and women) buy their clothes and shoes from large chains, i.e. they're generic looking, no style, no taste.

In DC, men and women largely aim to blend in, conform. Standing out- in terms of fashion or looks- isn't viewed as a great thing.
Miami is a colorful city. Warm, bright, tropical, island influences. This lends itself to people wearing a lot of color, decor that is bright, and more skin.
Being tall and thin is not generally the goal, in South Florida, for women.
DC people, to me, are largely not attractive and don't place the same type or level of emphasis on looks, color, standing out, etc. If I had to generalize.

Yes. Beautiful women AND men have better advantages in this world. Both financially and socially.

But we aren't judging the ugly men in dc are we?

go to the hill and look around. It's not just because the staffers are generally younger. They look and dress much better than folks in DC because they are from other parts of the country.

DC is full of debate club nerds. They would look much better with some makeup, but think it’s beneath them.

People here aren’t ugly but they are: 1) a lot more “natural,” without a lot of cosmetic procedures or even makeup, and 2) not stylish. In some ways it’s good, because there’s a lot less emphasis on the superficial appearance. But in some ways it’s bad because there’s still that expectation of conformity, it’s just conformity to a sort of very low key deliberately unstylish and low effort aesthetic.

Nah, i disagree with this. I lived there for 10 years. ALot of people in miami are poor and dress like crap. Lots of young women who work at a mall kiosk and go out a lot and they still think wearing a cheap shein dress 1 size too small looks good. In the professional classes, the admin are all from lower social classes and often do the same thing - wear too tight stuff because they think it makes them look good. It's fashion 101 not to wear stuff too small. And all the other women in the office dress way more traditional and frumpy - my theory has always been to differentiate themselves from the admin class.

Most of the people living and working on miami beach look pretty normal.

There are definitely women who get all teh plastic surgery - but they're not who you're seeing day to day.

I have lived in other parts of Florida and i think the average person in other parts of florida look better than the average person in miami.

I moved here from Silicon Valley (I lived both in SV proper and in SF) and women there tend to be slim and fit. Style is much more low-key and natural. Even people who love brands and have a ton of money to spend on them won't buy flashy labels. It will be some expensive eco-friendly brand with no visible logos rather than LV stuff.

I would also point out that certain cities seem to have less of a stigma against getting plastic surgery.

LA and Miami seem like people have no problem discussing getting it more publicly and unabashedly. Stassi from VPR and her chin implant come to mind. It also seems like something people save for and not something only the wealthy consider. In addition, to putting more effort into makeup, hairstyle, etc.
