To each their own. I see a wall that is crying out for color. Even a nice light grey or something taupe like BM's Lenox Tan would look good up there and not clash with anything else going on in the room.

Do something fun, not boring. Use color, even if it's a subdued color, not something like cream or white.

I love what's going on in this picture with color. The color of your walls is really just a backdrop for what you're going to put in there. So, what kind of furniture do you have picked out? Any art you plan to put up on the walls, etc? Plan around the details, not the paint color. Much easier.

Another thing to remember, the color you choose is going to be much darker than it looks on the chip because it's a basement. So whatever color you choose, go two shades lighter. I promise you. Unless you have some really serious lighting, even white can look yellow in a basement.

We have SW Blonde (a warm yellow) in our basement office and Alpaca (light grey) in the common areas and Misty (light blue) in the kitchenette. I can't remember the color we used in the bathroom but it was a pale green.

I hate white walls, DH isn't a fan of bright colors. We're both really happy with the way it turned out. My advice to you is A) stick to the top 2 or 3 colors on a paint chip and B) when you settle on your final 2 or 3 colors, buy samples to paint on the wall. That way you can live with them and see if they'll really work in your basement before commiting.

I would do something fun, and maybe even a chalkboard wall.

OP, start looking at magazines or websites and find something that inspires you. Don't be afraid of going with a bright color for some punch. In my opinion, this part of the house should be playful. You could also do two-tones. Maybe go with a more colorful palette in the play area and a more subdued palette in the adult den area.

Lots of votes for yellow here, but yellow is really limiting and probably wouldn't go well with your carpet. And green, well, it can be tricky. The sage greens are over, because they've been overused for the past 15 years. Some greens, while they're pleasing on swatches, appear sickly and are reminiscent of hospitals once you get them on the wall.

We went with a really bright, true, white. Our main areas is in "parchment paper" and the bedrooms and bathrooms are a couple of variations on misty grey/green/blues, fwiw.

The white is a fun departure from the rest of the house and it helped us go with a really funky, mod style. So we have white furniture, a slate grey couch, a bright orange chair, and some other orange, red, and blue accents.

I like having the basement be BRIGHT.

we did a warm salmon about 14 years ago in our playroom (2 very small well windows) and it has held up -- white will be dirty, marked, and ruined in no time. we have 3 kids who have played soccer, gymnastics, tv, hung out -- it has lasted well - and i still feel happy when i go down there - not too bright and electric - just warm -- remember it is a basement so any blue cooler color will make it colder. we are about to finish off the rest of the basement so i was looking for ideas - lots of light and a bog room but not high ceilings...it will also be the guest room so i need to have go both ways -- teen cave and nice for guests -- ideas? prefer color -- thinking periwinkle family or doing the salmon again....

Antique White and Philadelphia Cream can also give pale yellow tones to a room, depending on the light.

Friends recently finished their basement and painted it a pale, warm, yellow-- almost a cream but with just a little more color. They have very little natural light and the room feels bright and airy.

Bright bright yellow - NO.

I like the idea of greens too...we actually did our trim and moldings in a spring green with light tan walls. It looked great and didn't make the basement dark with overbearing color yet still gave us color. I hate all white.

Sunshine yellow sounds scary. I'd have to see it.
