It's almost like there are many factors impacting where people choose to live!

If you hate where you live, move. There are very few industries exclusive to DC

You're missing a big huge one, pal.

Which one? Defense is the probably biggest employer in the region, but defense jobs are not exclusive to DC.

Government.

Egad, my kids even attended DC public schools and guess what - they went to college and can read.

Your opinion and lived experience is valid. So are the opinions and lived experiences of others. Not everyone has the same idyllic view out their windows as you.

The problem is that for every person who actually has a negative "lived experience" there are 20 people just parroting the sensationalized "OMG crime!" nonsense a friend of a friend of a friend posted on Facebook.

If I had a nickel for every online interaction I've had that went like this:

"DC is a crime infested hellhole!"

"Oh, did something happen to you?"

"Hell no, I haven't been into DC in years, it's a crime infested hellhole!"

I'd be a millionaire.

Sorry, all opinions aren't automatically valid just because you have one. If your opinion is based off of hearsay, Fox News, and forwards from grandma it's not valid.

So, you're the self-appointed arbiter of what's a valid and invalid opinion based on your own subjective criteria?

No, reality is the appointed arbiter of what's a valid and invalid opinion. It may be your opinion that the sky is green, but opinions can be wrong. If your opinion on DC is not based in objective reality, your opinion is invalid.

I fear you have a narrow understanding of what objective reality is.

The city of DC has an unconscionable number of homicides and people living below the poverty line for what is still the capital city of the world (in terms of economic and political influence).

That is an incredible shame and a stain on the US. Every other wealthy country has less violent crime in its capital than the US. America is the wealthiest nation that has the starkest inequalities, and it's obvious right here in DC. We need to change.

What do you suggest we do with all the poor blacks? Round them up and ship them all off to PG?

Mind you, I'm fine with you moving - it's up to you where you want to live. You don't have to justify it to anyone. But a lot of people are insecure, and feel like they have to talk down DC to justify their own actions.

A lot people love the city, tried to make it work, and realized for a plethora of reasons (e.g., safety, schools, city's future direction) it was in their best interest to move to the suburbs, even though they would have preferred staying.

Someone lives WOTP and has kids in the Deal/JR pyramid. I'm not saying WHO.

EOTR with no kids here. I agree with PP.

I have lived in DC for 20+ years and there are many things to like/love. There are also many things to complain about.

It's ok to want to change things you don't like.

People outside of DC don’t universally dislike DC. That is an odd sentiment. I’m in California but used to go frequently to DC for work, and found DCUM when we were considering a job transfer to DC that didn’t end up happening.

I love DC! It is a wonderful city. No DC hate here. If I had to move to the east coast, DC would probably be one of my top choices. It’s a fabulous city.

Another murder in broad daylight in an expensive neighborhood yesterday. Wear Kevlar if you’re out in DC.
