Former DCPS here and current contract sub in several other schools. I love subbing. But its hard right now, even in good schools. Kids are behind, demands are high, emotionally parents can be less than understanding with unrealistic expectations...

... all parents should be teaching their children at home or investing in tutors if your child attends public school. Even the good schools are struggling. Teachers that aren't quitting are getting sick. I've been sick so much this year, more than I've ever been...

...please keep your kids at home if you are sick.

Well considering David Pinder was removed as principal of McKinley for accusations of misusing funds and changing grades but is now high up in central office tells you everything you need to know about DCPS.

Our kid’s MS science teacher quit recently with apparently very little notice. According to the kid, she was frustrated with the administration doing nothing about disruptive students. The gripes were also thinly veiled at BTS night and the PTCs. As a parent, I am starting to worry for the future of DCPS.

Everyone is burned out and when teachers haven’t had a contract or raise in three years especially during inflation, what incentive is there to stay?

FWIW I quit DCPS with zero days notice. And did not have a job lined up. I was swooped up, almost instantaneously by a ‘Big 5/3’ private school in the area. It’s a lovely- supportive- and kind place to teach. Just teach.
And at several points in the interview process what was said to me was ‘if you can teach in DCPS- you can survive anywhere’

Ps. I never once had to explain ‘why’ I left DCPS or why I even left mid-year. No one has to ask questions when the answers are obvious


Could you share how the pay compares to DCPS? That’s my big worry, that it will be a huge pay cut that I can’t take at the moment. It really sucks being in a job just for a paycheck.


Yup! It’s less. But not as much of a paycut as I thought it’d be. But the perks are unreal. 16 kids. Two teachers. And they are paying for my PhD.

I left DCPS last year for another county in MD, not MCPS. It has been like a dream. I can’t believe I thought I had to put up with everything from DCPS.
